In 1773, he lived on Wallens Hill, near the town line of Barhamsted, Litchfield County, CT.

Between April and May of 1775, in the beginnings of the Revolutionary War (the War of Independence), John joined the 4th Connecticut Regiment and was deployed to Fort Ticonderoga in New York ( also known as Fort Carillion.) The soldiers of the regiment suffered greatly from illnesses and many were discharged (particularly between October and November), John was among them. He was released on September 22, 1775.

In 1776, the year after his release, John and Sarah established themselves on land that he owned on the south side of what is now Wallens Street in Winchester. The house in which they lived was near the top of a hill. In 1787, he donated part of it for use as a public cemetery. It is between Gilbert Avenue and Stanton Avenue - In 1929, the Greenwood Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, built a granite monument there to mark the site.

In 1787, John moved to Norfolk, approximately fifty miles northwest of Winchester, and remained there until his death in 1798.
