General Notes: He joined the Baptist church at age 16. After the death of his wife and child Eli then moved the next year to Orangeville, Wyoming Co., New York where he remarried.
In 1844 or 1845 they moved to Van Buren Co., Michigan. A few years later they moved to near Homer, Eckford Township, Calhoun Co., Michigan where he farmed. In 1860 his real property was worth $1500, and his personal property was worth $380. They were members of the First Baptist Church of Cook's Prairie.
In 1857 he was at the train station where the train arrived with a group of orphans that were put up for auction and adoption as field hands. Eli saw one weak looking boy and figured he would never survive field work, and adopted William as his son. He farmed until April 1884 when he retired to Homer and sold the farm to his son-in-law William A. Needham. She died in Homer on July 5, 1889 at age 66, of an enlarged liver . He died in Homer on February 17, 1895 at age 74, of pneumonia . They are buried in the Homer Village Cemetery. He was known as a kind, unassuming person who had a warm place in the hearts of his many friends and acquaintances.

General Notes: Mary Balcom descended from one of the best families in New England. She came to Kansas with her husband before a house was erected in Lawrence, passed through all the trials of the early struggles of the persecuted free-state people, and as largely as a woman could, aided in every good work, doing the full duty of a pioneer mother in founding the State upon the everlasting principles of freedom. She was an intelligent, intellectual, noble woman.
