1.    William Taylor. Died in Burnside, Grnge Parish, Banffshire.

Tom Annand wonders about the validity of William and Helen Ann as the ultimate source of the family. "If it is true, then there are probably at least *two* generations separating them. My own hunch as to the father of George Taylor (b.c.1748) is William Taylor in Burnside of Fortrie married to Helen Craib in 1727. There is no George listed in their baptismal record, but no children are recorded between 1741 and 1747, so it is possible that George was born in that time period to that family. The location is right, as well as the fact that George's eldest son was named William and that there were no less than three Wm Taylors present at the baptism in 1773, one in Burnside, two (elder and younger) in Fortrie. This is speculation on my part, but it keeps the family line within the parish lines. William and Helen's eldest son was baptized Alexander, and Alexander Taylor (in Braccobrae?) was a witness and perhaps William's father. From there the records become scarcer and speculations rise exponentially, but in this way a more comfortable series of links is sketched out. Taylor is such an incredibly numerous surname that it may be impossible ever to definitely establish a genealogy of these poor crofters".

He married Helen Ann. Born 1650. Died 1707.

A few genealogists associate Taylor as a big Norman name, a hero at Hastings, Taillefer, instead of the obvious Saxon tradesperson.

The term "Scot" originates from the Latin (Scotti) for Pirate or Bandit. It had to do with the fact that the Irish used to raid the Roman settlements for slaves and then sail off across the Irish Sea. The Romans were never any

good at seamanship and very rarely followed these raiding parties. The Word Gaelcomes from a similar origin. Gael- Gaelic Gaidheal- Old Goidel- Welsh Gwyddell meaning Raider or Bandit- like Scot.

Actually born in Grange Parish, Knock, Banffshire, possibly the village of Knock, across the river from Rothiemay.

George Taylor was a farmer in Cairnhill, Grange Parish, until about 1806, when he moved his family about 5 miles east to Ternemny in Rothiemay Parish.

From the Taylor History: While overseas in the late war, John Henderson Taylor the 2nd (b1912) was able to see the place where the Taylors lived in Scotland and saw the house they had left in 1810. He also saw the old crane the Taylors had in their fireplace. It was built into a new house that was built sometime later.

Journal: "times and movements and places of steps on our way to Nova Scotia. Moved from Farnemney /Ternemny the 30th day of July , 1810; reached Aberdeen the same night, sailed from Aberdeen the first day of August, landed at Port Dundas on the 6th. Sett off from Glascow on the 7th with filey boat by 8:00o'clock forenoon. Landed at Greenoch by 2 p.m. remained there until the10th of the month. Then went on board the "Sir Edward Pillow". Lay 2 days at the tail of the bank, sett sail on the 12th. Landed at Halifax on the 26th of October 1810, remained there until the 12th of October 1814. Then moved the family to the wildwoods of Musquodoboit + etc. Diary of George Taylor Capt. who frightened French privateers by wearing his red coat uniform on deck.

1810 the British and French were at war. A french privateer followed the Boat and was gaining on them as it was faster. The captain ordered all men on deck and all women and children below. George Taylor asked for 5 minutes to go below. Capt. said 'NO', there would be no shrinking. Taylor said he would be back on deck in good time, no more than five minutes. Capt agreed. Taylor was a captain of the militia in Scotland. He went below to put on his uniform and as he came on deck he said; "If I am going to fight, I'm going to fight in my colors" Capt said "Good, you have done it. Get up quick there and walk the bridge" He did and very soon the French vessel changed her course and gave them no more trouble. The sight of one red coat had made them suspicious of surprise.

George Taylor built in Musquodoboit, a threshing machine -in 1840, largely original in detail. Horse on a lever traveling in a circle.

He was one of three appointed to take charge of erecting the first Presbyterian Church in the valley in 1815. A full gallery and holding 700 souls. The building went up very quickly, but the inside was not finished until 1818 as the contractor abscounded with the advanced funds.

His wife and his Eulogy: ""Served well, not only their day and generation but succeeding generations as well, choosing a life of hardship that their children might have better opportunities"

Her husband Alexander died in 1839 after being married for 16 months and MaryAnn "far advanced in pregnancy" with their only child.

Sources from the Cook genealogy indicate the child was male, named Alexander Jr.and died very young - possibly during the plague that swept the valley in 1844.

She first married Alexander Annand, son of John Annand Sr. & Elizabeth McAfee (McHaffey?), Circa Jan 1838. Died 9 Apr 1839.

Alexander and his brother David were co-executors of their father's estate and both inherited the farm in 1834. It would seem that David bought land at Lake Egmont in 1836, and so the family farm may have passed to Alexander, who died intestate at Gay's River on April 9, 1839, leaving his wife of sixteen months who was expectng their first child. His widow, Mary Ann Taylor petitioned the government to appoint John Annand of Gay's River (another brother of Alexander) to be guardian of her "orphan child".
