Landxtion: 04 Dec 1734 received 100 acres of land in Worcester from Brother-in-Laws, which was the homestead of their father and part of their late brother James Rice.

May 16, 2013: This is Robert F. Royce. You are perpetrating a falsehood. (See note below posted in 2003.) I am a direct and clear descendant of Abisha Rice (b. 1701). I am 12 for 12 Edmund Rice haplotype. I have also been quoted incorrectly. I thought this nonsense had been put to rest. The name change is not becuase of David Royce. No one in my family at the time of the name change (1850s) would have even known of David Royce. I know the story only too well. Abishai and Mathias were Gershom's children.

(Note: In about 2003 I had my DNA tested at Family Tree as part of the Rice project. At that time I was uncertain as to the origins of my line but the results came in and I was told 12 for 12. It was the Rice Association that doubted me. They could not get beyond the Royce version of the name but it is very easily explained. The old pronunciation of Rice was more like the modern Royce, and so it goes. I have actually located and read Abisha Rice's (b. 1740 d. 1797) will and probate papers. Extremely interesting. For a brief while I thought that David Royce may have been my ancestor, but, no, nothing as exotic as that. Robert F. Royce)

Abishai married Francis Rice, daughter of James Rice and Sarah Stone, about 1723-1724.5 Francis was born on 6 Mar 1703 in Marlborough, Middlesex Co, MA5 and died about 17975 aged about 94.

General Notes: Residence: circa 1723 at Worcester, Worcester Co, MA.

Jotham Rice and his brothers, Zebadiah, Tyrus, and Jessaniah conveyed on 12/4/1734 "100 acres of land (in Worcester) to our brother-in-law, Abishai Rice, who married our sister, Frances Rice; which land was the homestead of our honored father, in part, and partly land of our late brother, James Rice, deceased; bounded south, on the town line; westerly, by land of Jonas Rice, in part, and partly by land of Ellisha Rice; northerly, on a highway; easterly, on land of Nathaniel Moore and Thomas Rice." Sarah Rice, their mother, signed the deed, "I am content."

October 2003: DNA testing indicates that Abishai was not descended from Edmund Rice (nor, Elizabeth Balcom(e)) but from Robert Royce of Stratford, Connecticut. What an amazing story it has turned out to be. Elizabeth was, I would have to say stated by Robert F. Royce, a fine Christian woman in the true sense, for she took in two orphaned children and raised them as her own. One of those children was Abishai Rice (Royce) son of David Royce of Norwich, Connecticut. And now we think that's why the name went back to Royce. ... more to come. The other child was his younger brother, Matthias.
